If you spend any time researching a clean-tech company before you back it, you eventually check for patents. Search for ours and you won't find one on the C2C process itself. That's not an oversight, and I'd rather explain the decision than let you wonder about it.A patent is a trade. You get twenty years of legal exclusivity, and in exchange the entire process gets published for the world to read, line by line. Anyone with the expertise — a competitor, a copycat, a country with less interest in respecting foreign IP — gets a blueprint. They don't get to sell it under our name, but they get to see exactly how it works and start building around it, or worse, finding the one input they'd need to replicate it without infringing the letter of the patent.We made a different call: protect the C2C process as a trade secret instead. Nobody outside the company knows the exact recipe, so nobody can copy it, full stop — not "copy it legally," copy it at all.Here's how that actually gets enforced, because a trade secret is only as strong as the discipline around it. Every commercial agreement we sign carries a hard refusal on know-how disclosure — the process itself is never handed over, licensed, or explained in a way that could be reverse-engineered from the paperwork. Liability is capped at full contract value as a floor, not a ceiling, so there's real financial exposure if that discipline is ever broken. And on the sales side, we hold to a 90-day termination notice, which gives us room to act if a relationship starts looking like it's drifting toward a disclosure risk rather than a customer relationship.What this means for you as someone evaluating the company: the protection isn't a filing that sits in a government database with an expiration date. Why We Didn't Patent Our Core Technology — And What That Means for You

Most Americans believe they're good recyclers. WM's 2025 Recycling Report found that 77% of people say they recycle regularly. The actual national material recycling rate sits at 32.1%, and even generous estimates that include composting put the diversion rate around 35%. Nearly 70% of the municipal solid waste (MSW) generated in the US ends up somewhere other than a recycling facility, mostly in a landfill.That gap between intention and outcome is the real story of North American waste management right now. It isn't that people don't care. The system built to catch what they set out at the curb was never designed for the volume or complexity of what actually gets thrown away.Why the recycling rate stalled US recycling tonnage grew fast between 1980 and 2010, from 14.5 million tons to 65 million tons a year. Since then it has barely moved: 69 million tons by 2018, and current national rates have plateaued in the low-to-mid 30s. Meanwhile total MSW generation kept climbing, from 251 million tons in 2010 to 292 million tons in 2018, according to the American Society of Civil Engineers' infrastructure assessment.A few things happened at once. China's 2018 National Sword policy cut off the export market that used to absorb a large share of US recyclables, forcing municipalities to either build domestic processing capacity or send more material to landfills. Packaging got more complex, with multi-layer films and composite materials that single-stream facilities can't sort economically. And curbside contamination, food waste, plastic bags, and non-recyclable items mixed into recycling bins, keeps driving up processing costs and rejection rates.States have responded with extended producer responsibility (EPR) laws. Several states, including California, Colorado, Oregon, and Maine, now require packaging producers to fund collection and recycling infrastructure rather than leaving the cost to cities. New Hampshire and Wisconsin introduced similar bills in 2026, and a handful of Northeast states are debating their own versions. EPR shifts who pays for the system. It doesn't create anywhere new for the material to go once it's collected.The capacity problem underneath the policy problem Landfill capacity in most regions is holding for now, but "holding" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. New landfill permits face years of environmental review and consistent local opposition, and older sites are closing faster than new ones are opening. State-level capacity studies, like Florida's 2025 assessment, are among the few tools tracking this closely, and most point the same direction: available space is a fixed, shrinking resource in a system built around infinite expansion.Recycling alone was never going to solve this. Even a well-run single-stream program tops out around 35% diversion, because a large share of MSW, food scraps, contaminated paper, mixed plastics, textiles, is either not recyclable at scale or not economical to sort. That leftover material still needs somewhere to go, and right now the default is a hole in the ground that will eventually run out of room.Where waste-to-energy closes the gap Waste-to-energy conversion takes the material recycling can't capture- roughly two-thirds of MSW that isn't getting diverted- and processes it into usable power instead of burying it. Modern conversion technology reduces landfill volume substantially while generating renewable electricity or fuel from a waste stream that otherwise has no productive use. It doesn't compete with recycling. It picks up where recycling's limits are.The World Bank's 2026 "What a Waste 3.0" report projects global waste generation will hit nearly 4 billion tonnes a year by 2050 without major shifts in how countries handle disposal. North America's Recycling Gap and the Case for Waste-to-Energy

America is running out of landfill space, and recycling won't save itThe U.S. buries or burns roughly 292 million tons of trash a year. Most of it goes into the ground. That math worked when land was cheap and landfills sat far from anyone who complained. It doesn't work now.The landfill math doesn't add up anymoreNationally, the U.S. has somewhere between 15 and 62 years of landfill capacity left, depending on whose model you trust. Bryan Staley, CEO of the Environmental Research &amp; Education Foundation, puts the number at 62 years overall. That average hides where the real damage is happening. Seven states are projected to run out of landfill space within five years. The Northeast alone is on track to lose about 30% of its remaining capacity in that time. Total U.S. capacity is forecast to drop more than 15% over the next five years.Meanwhile, a handful of mega-landfills in Nevada, Texas, and Georgia have room measured in centuries. That's the real crisis: not a national shortage, but a geographic one. Cities in the Northeast and parts of the Midwest are trucking trash hundreds of miles to landfills in other states, paying rising tipping fees the whole way. Every mile adds cost and emissions to a system that was supposed to be a local, boring utility.Recycling was supposed to fix this. It hasn't.The EPA's most recent estimate puts the national recycling rate at around 32%, with newer figures showing modest gains toward 35%. The EPA's own goal is 50% by 2030. Getting there would take an estimated $28 billion in recycling infrastructure investment the country hasn't committed.There's also a gap between what Americans say and what they do. Surveys show roughly 78% of people claim they recycle regularly. Actual diversion rates tell a different story. Plastic film, batteries, and contaminated glass routinely get pulled from the recycling stream and landfilled anyway, because there's no market for them once they're mixed with everything else. Contamination isn't a minor nuisance — it's the reason entire truckloads get rejected at the sorting facility and sent straight to the landfill they were supposed to avoid.Policy is catching up, slowlySeven states — California, Colorado, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Oregon, and Washington — have passed extended producer responsibility laws that make packaging manufacturers pay into the recycling system instead of leaving the cost to municipalities. Oregon and Colorado have compliance fees in effect now. A handful of other states are drafting similar bills. It's a real shift, but it covers a fraction of the country, and it only touches packaging. It does nothing for the roughly two-thirds of municipal solid waste that still isn't recycled at all.That's the gap waste-to-energy is built to close. The U.S. runs 63 waste-to-energy facilities across 18 states, converting municipal solid waste that would otherwise sit in a landfill for decades into electricity, with far less land use and far lower methane output than burial. It's a modest slice of the country's power generation today, a little over 2,000 megawatts of capacity, but it's the part of the waste hierarchy that scales fastest once a region hits its landfill limit and can't just ship the problem to a neighbouring state.None of this replaces source reduction or better recycling design. But landfill capacity is a fixed asset running out on a fixed clock, and recycling alone isn't closing the gap fast enough for the states already counting down the years. Pull a bottle out of the ocean and it is easy to picture a single culprit: someone on a beach, a boat dumping its trash overboard, a storm drain near the shore. The real picture is bigger and less visible. Most ocean plastic starts inland, moves through rivers most people have never heard of, and travels months or years before it reaches open water. Understanding that path matters, because it points to where the problem can actually be stopped.Rivers carry most of it inA 2021 study by researchers at The Ocean Cleanup, published in Science Advances, mapped more than 1,000 rivers responsible for roughly 80% of the plastic that reaches the ocean by river each year, a volume the study put between 0.8 million and 2.7 million metric tons. That finding overturned an earlier assumption that a small number of giant rivers did most of the damage. Instead, small and mid-sized urban waterways, many running through dense, fast-growing cities, turned out to carry a disproportionate share. Forty-four of the top 50 rivers on the list run through Asia, which tracks with population density and the pace of urbanization in the region, not any special carelessness on the part of the people who live there.Timing matters too. Rivers in the tropics leak plastic into the sea more or less continuously. Rivers in temperate climates often flush most of a year's plastic in a single event, commonly a rainy-season surge in August, when stormwater picks up trash that has accumulated on streets, in drains, and along riverbanks and pushes it downstream all at once.Fishing gear adds a second streamRivers are not the only route. Derelict fishing gear, known as ghost gear, adds an estimated 640,000 tonnes of nets, lines, traps, and buoys to the ocean every year. Industry and conservation groups estimate ghost gear makes up around 10% of ocean plastic globally, and in some regional hotspots the figure runs closer to half. It is also disproportionately deadly: entangled fish, seabirds, seals, and whales account for roughly 100,000 marine animal deaths a year tied to lost or abandoned gear. Unlike a plastic bag, a net keeps trapping animals for as long as it stays intact in the water, which for some synthetic materials means decades.The trend line is headed the wrong wayBoth of these pathways trace back to the same root cause: waste that never made it into a functioning collection, treatment, or disposal system. The OECD's Global Plastics Outlook projects global plastic waste will almost triple by 2060 under current policy. Right now, roughly half of all plastic waste worldwide is landfilled and less than a fifth is recycled. The OECD projects the share of plastic waste that escapes any waste management system entirely, dumped in the open, burned in uncontrolled pits, or leaked directly into soil and waterways, will actually shrink as a percentage, falling from about 22% today to around 15% by 2060. But because total plastic production and waste generation are growing faster than management capacity, the absolute tonnage of mismanaged waste is still projected to nearly double, from 79 million tonnes in 2019 to 153 million tonnes in 2060.That is the uncomfortable math behind the plastic soup: even modest gains in the percentage of waste properly handled will not be enough if the total volume keeps climbing. The rivers study and the ghost gear numbers both point to the same upstream weakness. Municipal waste systems in fast-growing cities are not built to keep pace with how much material they now need to collect, process, and permanently remove from circulation.That gap is exactly where waste-to-energy fits. Converting municipal solid waste into power before it can sit in an open dump, wash into a river, or fragment into microplastics removes it from the leakage pathway entirely, rather than hoping a downstream cleanup effort catches it later.
